From Chaos to Calm

During the fall of 2018, I realized our family was in a season of transition as our four boys were becoming more independent young adults, and I was feeling unsettled in this unfamiliar territory. As life was starting to feel just a bit overwhelming, I craved a sense of order and the need to simplify my life, so I started listening to podcasts, Googling, and reading books on the topics of minimalism, frugality, and home organizing.

One day, I left the library laden with an armload of books (the irony not lost on me in my quest for minimizing, simplifying, and decluttering).

I chose to read Marie Kondo’s book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, first; its small size, attractive cover, and promising title had caught my attention. It turns out, it was the only book that I had actually needed to bring home that day. I devoured the book in no time, laughing out loud at times when she not only acknowledged, but debunked every single excuse I have ever made in an attempt at organization. I felt as if Marie Kondo was speaking directly to me. Her method incorporates gratitude and intention, which especially resonates with me. But what really sold me is the concept that – when followed properly – sorting, decluttering, and organizing is a one-time event.

I’m happy to report that my closet is still a Konmari’d closet, my home is tidy, and it sparks joy every time I enter it.

The most profound effects I have experienced as a result of this process are the shift in my perspective, the reinforcement of my values, and the clarity of my priorities.

My personal journey has inspired me to create Bluebird Home to help others discover their own life-changing magic.
